About

About LoanGoose

LoanGoose exists because comparing borrowing in Canada is unnecessarily hard. The rates are advertised, the real costs are buried, and the rules that decide what you can actually get are scattered across federal law and thirteen provincial regimes.

What we are

We are an independent loan matching and comparison service. We publish explanations of how each kind of Canadian borrowing works, what the rules allow, what the numbers look like, and what to check before you sign anything. When you ask to be matched, we pass your request to a partner network so that lenders and brokers can present their own options to you.

We are not a lender. We do not make loans, we do not set interest rates, we do not decide who is approved, and we do not hold or service any debt. Every loan you take is a contract between you and a lender that has its own licence and its own obligations.

We are also not a credit repair company and we do not offer credit cards. If a site claims it can delete accurate information from your credit report, that claim is not true, and we would rather you heard that from us.

How we make money

Using LoanGoose costs you nothing. When you click through to a partner and go on to take a product, the partner may pay us a commission. That is the whole business model, and it is disclosed next to every commercial link on the site as well as on our affiliate disclosure page.

Commercial relationships do not buy a better explanation, a softer warning, or a place in our guides. Where a product is a bad idea for most people — short-term payday-style credit is the clearest example — we say so on the product page itself, in the same place we offer the comparison step.

How we handle numbers

Every figure we publish is attributed to the body that produced it: the Criminal Code and the federal payday lending regulations, the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada, the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy Canada, the Bank of Canada, provincial regulators, and Statistics Canada for population data.

Where we cannot verify a current value against the publisher's own publication, we leave it out. Our provincial rules tables deliberately show "confirm with the publisher" in some cells rather than a figure we could not stand behind. A blank is more useful than a wrong number when someone is deciding whether they can afford a loan.

Who this site is for

Canadian residents comparing consumer or business borrowing: personal and instalment loans, car loans, lines of credit, home equity and mortgage products, business financing and debt consolidation. The site is written in English for a Canadian audience, uses Canadian spelling, and quotes Canadian rules.

Nothing here is financial, legal, tax or accounting advice, and nothing here is an offer or an approval. Significant borrowing decisions deserve a licensed professional who can look at your whole situation.

Is LoanGoose a lender?

No. LoanGoose is a loan matching and comparison service. We do not make loans, set rates, or make credit decisions. Any loan you take is with a licensed lender under their own terms.

Does it cost anything to use the site?

No. The site and the calculators are free. We may earn a commission from a partner if you click through and take a product, which is disclosed beside every commercial link.

Can you get a loan approved for me?

No, and we would never claim to. Approval depends entirely on a lender's own criteria and your file. Anyone promising approval before an application is worth treating with suspicion.
